Denethor flee for your lives
Denethor flee for your lives

In a series where dark artifacts have a powerful twisting effect on the minds of people who use them, and where most of the characters shy away from anything too powerful for fear of being corrupted, Denethor is searching out every weapon he can, good or evil, his or someone else’s, he doesn’t care. In fact, he wants every piece of dark magic and technology that he can possibly get his hands on to defend his city. He will defend his tower, come what may.ĭenethor wants the ring. So: what are the strikes against Denethor, exactly? I’m going to be going by book canon rather than film canon here, since it’s got a lot more detail (and, frankly, doesn’t seem quite so hell-bent on making Denethor a moron). Since Denethor is also a much more unpleasant person, let’s talk about him instead. In fact, just about the only thing you could fault Boromir on (besides a momentary lapse under the influence of powerful mind control) is his politics, which he shares with his father. He’s such an obviously good person - brave, kind, intelligent, funny - that the worst you could call him is a tragic figure.

I was going to write this as a defense of Boromir, but the truth is that Boromir doesn’t really need defending.
